The Essex Air Ambulance carries Clinicians and sophisticated life-saving equipment to a patient within the first few vital minutes of an emergency.
Over 8,500 missions flown to date.
The aircraft costs in excess of £105,000 each month to run but receives no central Government or National Lottery funding; relying upon the generous people of Essex to raise sufficient revenue to keep it flying.
The current Air Ambulance is a Eurocopter EC 135 T2. The helicopter is powered by 2 Arrius gas turbine engines and can take off within 2 minutes of an emergency call being received at Boreham airbase. Flying at around 150 miles per hour it is able to reach the farthest points in Essex in approx 15 minutes. The maximum flying time to the nearest hospital from anywhere is Essex is 8 minutes, saving vital minutes when conveying emergency patients.
The Eurocopter carries full life-support medical equipment, including space to hold an incubator - and is able to carry up to 2 patients at any one time – 1 on stretcher, 1 sitting. The aircraft has space to carry a Doctor or patient’s relative if necessary (particularly important if the patient is a child). The previous Air Ambulances did not have room for a patient’s relative or carer.
